Technological impacts on food, disease, and medicine.

I’ve been doing some research on food, diseases and medicine lately and really wanted to share my findings as I feel they are extremely important:

 

Food is directly correlated with disease, as disease is directly correlated with science and technology. For this reason, it is wise to conclude that food is directly affected in both positive and negative ways, by science and technology.

 

In an effort to better understand the relationship between science, technology, food, and disease; it is imperative to understand their meanings. According to The Merriam-Webster Dictionary, these terms are defined as follows:

 

Science:

“knowledge about or study of the natural world based on facts learned through experiments and observation.”

 

Technology:

“the use of science in industry, engineering, etc., to invent useful things or to solve problems”.

 

Disease:

“an illness that affects a person, animal, or plant: a condition that prevents the body or mind from working normally”. (Merriam-Webster, 2015)

 

According to the above definitions, it would be wise to conclude, that all four of the aforementioned terms are correlated to each other with regards to evolution and advancement. Precisely due to disease, both medicine and technology, have integrated forces. The combined effort and collaboration of all three areas of studies, is important for the success of one another.

 

Through science, technological researchers have been able to part fundaments based on world facts and observation. Through technology, science has been able to advance through the creation and implementation of various tools and instrument that aid during research. Through disease, both science and technology, have been able to grow regarding information needed to develop each other and to develop better techniques for food processing. In an effort to build on the expansion of the correlation itself, we can take for instance, cholera as an example.

 

Technology will impact medicine and the treatment of food diseases in the future as it has a tremendous impact on all aspects of both world and human development. Medicine, just as other industries, has already had significant impact and evolution through out the years. Furthermore, additional testing and research, continue being the subject of focus, inside many institutions who are working pro-technology.

 

A great example of how technology has impacted medicine, was experienced during my employment with a local medical school, where I had the opportunity to work in various departments. On many occasions, I was asked to assist the STT (Simulation Technology Team). This team, not only works towards advancing technology, but also towards assisting other medical device manufacturing companies, into doing the same. Needles to say, numerous amounts of “beta” phased devices, have undergone testing at EVMS, and are currently undergoing experimentation.

 

VETO is a medical robot, who was been approved for release, in the year 2021, provided that testing and performance standards, are met within specified timeframes and. VETO is approximately 5.3” tall, and operates on rechargeable, long-lasting batteries. He has a small generator that can serve as a back up, in the event of emergency or battery outage. He has the capacity of rolling into different medical exam rooms, talking with patients, dispensing medical formulas, playing information videos on diseases, post-op care, pre-natal care etc. Furthermore, its screen can dial an on-call R.N. who will gladly speak with you in the event there are additional questions.

 

VETO was thought of for many reasons, but mainly in an effort to eliminate wait time in an E.D. upon readiness for discharge, and to reduce wait time and staffed personnel in medical practices and clinics. The long term goal of VETO, is to act as an alternative to medical personnel such as E.D. Techs, nursing assistants, etc.

 

Another example of how technology will impact medicine in the future, arises from our all ready refined pharmacy filling and dispensing process. Resources such as telephone refill line, mobile reminders, drive-through, faxing or scanning electronic formulas, mail-in orders, and more, are just some examples of how technology has impacted the pharmaceutical industry. In some parts of the U.S., as well as other countries; pharmacies, have added the option of in-home delivery, as well as online shopping for generic and prescribed medicine.

 

Lastly, while some of these advances have failed, others have had positive impact on our world and lives. Food inspection equipment per say, are able to detect abnormalities on various produce and other edible items. While these do not guarantee the freshness or safety of all products, they do help protect manufacturers and consumers from disease and legal disputes. Furthermore, they also assist in facilitating the control of food and beverages into the United States for regulatory agencies such as the Food and Drug Administration, also known as the FDA.

 

Food and medicine welfare, is an ongoing effort in the world. With more and more hands at work, we can expect to see significant technological advances in the upcoming year, that will aide in the safety and quality of these products and others.

 

P.S. This wasn’t just my project and accomplishment. I’ve been working it with my old college roommate Tom who’s in Wilmington, NC. He’s owns a tree removal company there, so please give him a shout out if ever in the area.
